Hello Climbers, Skiers and Hikers! Welcome back for the 2013 season on Mount Baker. Climbing Rangers begin their patrols in June and will be working hard to collect trail condition reports and route information for your needs. Here are a couple important changes to note before heading up to the mountain.
Glacier Creek Road #39, which accesses Heliotrope Ridge Trail and the Coleman Glacier Route is currently closed at the Thompson Creek bridge, approxiamtely 1 mile from the intersection with highway 542. Only hikers or bikers (non-motorized) are currently permitted to travel the final 7 miles to the Heliotrope Ridge Trailhead. Boots, gaitors and trekking poles are advised for the hike. There will be no mountain toilets flown onto Mount Baker this season. All users are asked to use Blue Bags or a similar waste removal system for all human refuse while recreating on the mountain. Blue Bags are offered free of charge from the USFS Visitor Centers in both Sedro-Woolley and Glacier. Please stop in to register for your climb and pick some up.
Be sure to educate yourself on the anticipated weather forecast prior to your trip. Storms are common on the mountain throughout the month of June, come prepared. All groups should be roped while travelling on the glacier and have knowledge in glacier travel and crevasse rescue techniques.
As a reminder, illegal guiding is prohibited on Mount Baker. Leading or participating in an unauthorized guided course or climb is a citable offense. Please make sure that you have planned a trip with a concessioned guide or outfitter. Thanks and enjoy your time on the mountain.
